THE Great Big Green Week

“He is the One Who has placed you as successors on earth and elevated some of you in rank over others, so He may test you with what He has given you.” (Qur’an, 6:165)

Our role as caretakers of the Earth is a divine responsibility emphasised throughout the Quran. Allah has entrusted humanity with the duty to protect and nurture His creation, reminding us that our actions should reflect gratitude, balance, and care for the environment. Guided by this principle, the Muslim Mind Collaborative proudly supported the Great Big Green Week Campaign this past June (8-16), showcasing how faith inspires sustainability, stewardship, and mental well-being.

As part of the campaign, we highlighted the work of numerous inspiring Muslim environmentalists, sharing their impactful journeys to encourage Muslims to lead more eco-conscious lives. From individuals advocating for zero-waste lifestyles to community leaders cultivating greener, more sustainable spaces, these change makers embody the principles of environmental mindfulness and spiritual balance deeply rooted in Islamic teachings.

We shared the incredible efforts of organisations like Sustainably Muslim, which advocates for reducing waste through practical, faith-aligned practices. Similarly, we featured the contributions of community gardeners who integrate spiritual well-being with environmental stewardship in urban green spaces. These were just a few among the many powerful stories we spotlighted throughout the week.

Through this campaign, we aimed to show how care for the Earth is not just an environmental concern but also a spiritual and mental health priority. The connection between nature and mental well-being is profound, with time spent in green spaces proven to reduce stress and foster mindfulness. The stories shared highlighted how Muslim environmentalists are using their faith as a guide to lead meaningful efforts—from advocating in international campaigns and sustainable fashion to creating spaces that nurture both community and personal well-being.

By amplifying these voices, the Great Big Green Week became an opportunity to encourage the Muslim community to reflect on their own sustainable practices. It reminded us all that living in harmony with the environment is not only achievable but essential for ensuring the well-being of future generations—physically, mentally, and spiritually.

The Quran consistently teaches us to avoid excess and waste, to live in moderation, and to act as stewards of the Earth. It is through campaigns like this that we can turn these teachings into collective action. As the Great Big Green Week Campaign demonstrated, faith and sustainability go hand in hand, showing us that small, consistent efforts—when guided by purpose—can lead to transformative change.

We encourage everyone to join this journey of sustainability and to honour our responsibility as stewards of the Earth. Together, we can build a future where the principles of sustainability, stewardship, and care create a healthier, more inclusive world for all.
